Carbon Footprint Reduction

We care for the environment

Our commitment to reducing the Carbon Footprint

At Gremca, we are committed to implementing strategies for reducing and offsetting greenhouse gas emissions, from cultivation to the palm oil extraction process, through the use of renewable energy sources, technologies to optimize the use of water resources and reduce fuel consumption, and reforestation and ecosystem restoration initiatives.

Achieving our goal

Close to
Carbon Neutral

The good practices developed have allowed us to reduce direct emissions from 1,243 kilograms of CO2 per ton of crude palm oil produced, emitted in 2021, to 239 kilograms of CO2 per ton of crude palm oil produced, emitted until the month of August 2025, which allows us to get closer and closer to achieving the carbon neutral goal.

How it is calculated

Methodology for
Carbon Footprint calculation

The quantification of the carbon footprint for palm oil produced in GREMCA is carried out annually with the greenhouse gas (GHG) calculator, validated and verified by the certifying entities during external audits of the RSPO, ISCC and CORSIA standards, includes the emissions associated with the change in land use (CLU), to each of the inputs, use of agricultural machinery, transport and processing, used in cultivation and in the primary benefit plant, such as fossil fuels, fertilizers, agrochemicals, water and electricity.

Climate Change mitigation Project

Our biogas-based energy generation project has been presented as a climate change mitigation project – CCMP, for the certification of emissions and the registration of carbon credits generated, under the CERCARBONO standard, validated by ICONTEC at the beginning of the year 2024.

The GREMCA climate change mitigation project aims to implement actions for the management and use of waste from the Company’s African palm oil extraction plant, for energy generation, both thermal and electrical, either for self-consumption and/or export to the national interconnected system (SIN).

Therefore, the activity of the GREMCA CCMP project could reduce GHG emissions in several ways. First, it directly reduces methane emissions by capturing and burning biogas. Secondly, it indirectly reduces carbon dioxide emissions by using biogas to displace fossil fuels or electricity consumption from the SIN, which would otherwise be used to provide electricity and heat.

In total, the CCMP GHG Reduction Project – GREMCA will mitigate up to 33,569 tons of CO2e per year during the first 10 years of the credit period.
